Update on Alton Grain Terminal
Wednesday, July 16
The Current situation in relation to the Alton Grain Terminal Explosion and subsequent events has not changed greatly since last Friday. The salvage a reclamations crews continue to carefully dismantle parts of the terminal structure while removing the corn and soybeans inside the structure. This process has been hindered due to continuing fires in certain parts of the structure. It is estimated that about ½ of the original grain volume in the structure will be removed by the end of this week and that hopefully by the end of the week of July 21 that the grain will be removed and with it the fire hazzards.
Once the fires are extinguished then and only then can structural engineers and the State Fire Marshals Office access the facility and do their evaluations.
Safety of workers and employees in the process is first priority.
We ask that the public respect the orange restricted area cones and stay clear of the area as until the fire and explosion danger is removed, only approved personnel are allowed in the area.
We are already in the process of evaluating our options for this fall harvest and assure our patrons we will do everything possible to meet their needs and handle their harvest at all locations including the Terminal. It may require more patience but together we will get the harvest handled.
Sincerely
Skip Hein General Manager
